The Challenge: The Crisis in the Vale do Javari

The Vale do Javari Indigenous Territory, located in the far southwest of the Brazilian Amazon, holds the highest concentration of isolated indigenous tribes in the world. Due to its location on a sensitive international triple border (Brazil, Peru, and Colombia), the territory faces violent incursions from transnational criminal networks: poaching, illegal mining, drug trafficking, and illegal logging.

In June 2022, the world was shocked by the brutal murders of indigenous expert Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips in this region. This tragedy exposed devastating structural gaps in state protection and underscored the urgent need for systemic, coordinated security responses to safeguard those on the frontline.

The Master's Project and Real-World Impact

My research is entirely action-oriented. The primary technical output of my Master's thesis will be the creation of an Integrated Operational Protocol for Military Police Actions in Border Indigenous Territories.

This protocol will design operational workflows connecting the Military Police, FUNAI (National Indigenous Foundation), IBAMA (Environmental Agency), and the Federal Police. It will guarantee that public security enforcement operates in strict compliance with indigenous rights and the active protection of isolated tribes.

Why I Need Your Support

To make this research viable over the next 24 months, I must conduct complex field expeditions to the remote municipality of Atalaia do Norte and advanced monitoring outposts along the Javari and Ituí river networks. Logistics in the deep Amazon are exceptionally costly (boat fuel, river transit, sustenance, and specialized field gear).

Since this independent research currently lacks traditional institutional grants, I am launching this crowdfunding campaign to finance the science that keeps the forest standing and its peoples safe.

About Me

Hello! My name is João Bosco Filho. I am a Forestry Engineer and a Non-Commissioned Officer in the Environmental Police Battalion of the Amazonas State Military Police, Brazil. Driven by the severe challenges facing our rainforest, I decided to bridge my frontline field experience with rigorous scientific research through a Professional Master's Degree in Protected Areas Management at the world-renowned INPA (National Institute for Amazonian Research).
