We are a group of investigators, biologists and veterinarians, who study the biology and health of wild birds, specifically Neotropical-Nearctic migratory seabird - a complicated name for birds that frequent the beaches and migrate from the Canadian Arctic to South America, with the proximity of the boreal fall. Therefore, from now on, we will just call them shorebirds.
From September to April they mainly occupy the coasts of the, where they live most of their life cycle. For example, the bird you see on the cover of our project, the Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla), weighing between 20 and 40g, is able to fly 5.250km in six days, over the Atlantic Ocean.
Throughout this journey, these birds occasionally need to stop and refuel. In the stopover sites they rest, feed and change their feathers worn by long flights, and also accumulate energy for the next leg of the trip or the trip back to the Northern Hemisphere. Along the Brazilian coast, we can find several of these locations, called “wintering sites” (term related to the Northern Hemisphere winter), which are extremely important for the maintenance and conservation of various species.
Our project aims to study the birds that use one of these places to rest and feed, the Ilha da Restinga, in the Paraíba do Norte River estuary located in the municipality of Cabedelo, Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil.
In April of this year we managed to capture a Semipalmated Sandpiper with a green numbered flag on the leg. This flag is placed to identify each marked bird. With the help of binoculars and telescopes we can read the numbers in the distance. Each country has a flag color, so, if you see a marked bird on the beach, you may know in which country the little bird was marked. A blue flag is from Brazil, a white one is from Canada, orange is from Argentina, red is from Chile, and dark or lime green is from the United States - you just saw the picture on the right.
And why do we need help? First, to buy blue flags. They are imported, made of a special plastic and UV-resistant (do not change color). Second, to do more field trips to the Ilha da Restinga, in order to capture these birds and place the flags, and to capture birds already marked in other countries to show to the international scientific community the importance of this place for the conservation of shorebirds. And lastly, and absolutely important, we need to show the population of the municipality of Cabedelo, near the capital João Pessoa, the state of Paraíba and Brazil, the importance of this area in the international context for migratory shorebirds. We will show each resident, mainly through their children, in addition to tourists visiting the beaches, that the richness of that place is not only its white sands, blue sky and warm waters! There also exists an environment that must be preserved for birds who go through an entire continent in search of food, heat and rest!
Most of the people who live or frequent the area have no knowledge about the fantastic challenges that these birds passed to be there. Our goal, besides showing aspects of the biology of migratory birds to students from public and private schools in the city, is to foster pride of the population in receiving every year these birds that are studied by many researchers in several countries. We want to produce educational material presenting migration and the birds that perform it and are right there on their beaches. The project also provides for disclosure on social media, production of adhesives and posters and, if the appeal is enough, t-shirts and / or caps. We also thought of purchasing a small number of binoculars that are sufficient for the children themselves to observe the birds. The same disclosure / education material made for awareness activities will be used as rewards for those who support our project. We look forward to your cooperation!
